Not American Mahjong
Search the stores for "mahjong" and most of what comes back is a different game. We leave these out:
- Tile-matching solitaire (Vita Mahjong, Mahjong Titan, Mahjong by Microsoft, Mahjong Solitaire by MobilityWare). You clear matching pairs off a layout. There is no Charleston, no card and no opponents.
- Riichi and Hong Kong mahjong (Mahjong Soul, Hong Kong Mahjong Club). Other rule sets: no jokers, no Charleston and no card.
- Two Android apps called "American Mahjong" (by Game37s and by VOLCANO ENTERTAINMENT). The first describes a joker that "flips at the start of every game" and no card; the second doesn't mention the Charleston, jokers or a card.
- Tools, not games. Birdie Bam (win tracker), Bird Bam (score keeper for your group), Mahjboard (league and leaderboard manager), AMR Authority (scores and rankings for events), Mahj Passport (a journal of your games and tables), Mahj On (score slips and a card journal), Mahjong Mate (a card helper), Tile Tutor (a helper to use at a real table), Bam Good Time: Mahjong Club (clubs and events), Mahjong Friends Online (a shared table and tiles for friends who run the game themselves), The Mahj Report (scoring and standings tracker for a group). Handy at a real table, but you don't play a hand in them.
How we check
- What we check: for every app, where it runs, what it costs, whether it plays the computer and friends online, whether it has a daily and if everyone gets the same one, whether it has the Charleston, which card it plays, and its App Store and Google Play ratings.
- Where it comes from: only public pages. Apple's iTunes Lookup data and each App Store listing, each Google Play listing, and each maker's own site. We don't install apps, sign up or sign in. A web game that opens without an account, we open.
- How often: every week we re-read each App Store listing and each maker's page we cite, and a fact whose words are gone goes to a person to re-check. A page that only draws in a browser is checked to be up. Ratings are updated every four weeks, and a store search looks for new apps, which we read before adding.
- What we won't do: guess. If no page says it, the table says "Not stated". Ratings are the stores' own numbers, as of October 28, 2026.
- Something wrong or missing? Tell us through support and we'll check it the same way.
Sources
Each app's section above links the pages its facts come from. We re-read them every week, except pages drawn by a script, which we check are up (see How we check). We also used:
- Apple, iTunes Search and Lookup API (itunes.apple.com), for every App Store rating, rating count, price and latest version.
- The App Store listing of each app (apps.apple.com), for its description and in-app prices.
- Google Play listings (play.google.com), for ratings, downloads and last-update dates.
- The National Mah Jongg League's store (nationalmahjonggleague.org), for NMJL Online's membership prices.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best American Mahjong app?
- It depends on what you want. To play friends online, Mahjong 4 Friends is free on phones, tablets and the web. To learn, MAHJ: Learn American Mahjong is a one-time $4.99. For a daily hand, The Mahjong App, Mini Mahj and American Mahjong: Play Daily (ours) each deal everyone the same full hand, free in a browser. The table above compares all of them on the same facts.
- Is there a free American Mahjong app?
- Yes. These are free to play, as their makers describe them: Mahjong 4 Friends (with ads), The Mahjong App (with ads), Bam Dot Crack, Bam Good Time Mahjong Online, Mahj Trainer, Mahjong Alley (its listing says no ads), Daily Mah Jongg (with ads), MahJongo (with ads), amjong (in open alpha), Discard Lab, Mahjee, Mahjong Sports (with ads), Mahjtopia Learn, maj, Mama Jong (free for now, and its listing says no ads) and Mini Mahj. Many others are free to start and charge for more, such as unlimited games or this year's card; each one's price is in the table above.
- Can I play American Mahjong online with friends?
- Yes. Mahjong 4 Friends, Real Mah Jongg, NMJL Online, Mahj Parlour, The Mahjong App and others seat friends at one online table, and many fill an empty seat with a computer player. Some need a subscription to host; each app's section says which.
- Do American Mahjong apps use the 2026 card?
- Many do, some only on a paid plan. A few play their own cards instead, and some ask you to keep your own copy of the card beside you. The League's own NMJL Online needs a membership and the printed card.
- Is there a daily American Mahjong game?
- Yes, several. The Mahjong App, Mini Mahj, Daily Mahj, American Mahjong Practice (paid) and American Mahjong: Play Daily (ours) deal everyone the same full hand each day. Daily Mah Jongg gives everyone the same featured hand to win with. Others, like Mahjee, maj and The Order of the Tile, have a daily puzzle.
