American Mahjong

Learn American Mahjong

Short lessons from June, from your first look at the tiles to your first win. Each lesson takes a few minutes, and June reads it to you. The beginner lessons are free; the advanced strategy track is for members.

  • Your First Look: Where the game came from, what it is, how a round flows. You know why American Mahjong exists and what happens when people play it.
  • Know Your Tiles: Every tile, by name. You can name every tile on sight in under 3 seconds.
  • Building Hands: Groups, the card, your first favorites. You can read a hand from the 2026 card and tell a friend what it needs.
  • Game Day: Charleston, turn loop, calling, joker mechanics. You could sit down mid-game and keep up with the turn flow.
  • Your First Win: Declaring, payment, and how a session runs. You've played a practice hand. Ready for a real table.
  • Before Your First Night: Going to a real game soon? 15 minutes of prep. You're socially ready for your first real table.
  • At a Real Table: The small print, the wall, calls, mistakes, money, and house rules. You can sit down with a new group and keep up with the parts nobody explains.
  • Advanced Strategy: For players who know the rules and want to win more. You read the table, switch hands on time, redeem jokers, stop feeding other players, and play the endgame well. (Members)
